Conservatism and All Souls - Cyril Falls: The Heirs of War

2nd February 2021, 4:30 pm

During 1914-18 Cyril Falls (Fellow 1946-53) was an officer in the 36th (Ulster) Division, which was the paramilitary Ulster Volunteer Force under another name. His History of the division (1922) ranks with Seven Pillars of Wisdom as one of the most eloquent of Great War books. In it and in The Birth of Ulster (1936) Falls wrote with unfashionable sympathy of clannishness and provincialism. He saw beauty in Fermanagh and reasonableness in sectarianism. Falls’ oeuvre is full of insights into backwoodsmen’s conservatism and nationalism.
