The oval Buttery, where the Fellows used to eat lunch, is unique in its conception, which must be Hawksmoor's, although no designs for it survive. Its coffered ceiling is an ingenious combination of dome shapes and mathematically very interesting. In 2026 the artist Alison Turnbull used the ceiling as inspiration for works of art commissioned by All Souls with funds generously provided by Emeritus Fellow and award-winning theoretical physicist Professor John Cardy.
