Archives

The All Souls College Archives are the institutional memory of the College and include records of:

  • the administration of the College, including statutes and minute books, dating from the foundation in 1438
  • the College’s estates and properties, including charters dating back to the twelfth century, leases, maps and manorial records
  • the College’s finances from the 1440s onwards
  • the College’s buildings, including architectural drawings and plans
  • papers from many notable Wardens and Fellows.

Archives Catalogue

The archives were arranged by Warden Hovenden in the late sixteenth century and this order was maintained until the nineteenth century. Charles Trice Martin compiled A Catalogue of the Archives in the Muniment Rooms of All Souls' College, which was published in 1877. A digitised version of this catalogue can be viewed on the Internet Archive. Material generated after the catalogue was printed was, until the early twentieth century, listed by means of annotating the interleaved copy of the printed catalogue held in the College Library.

Since then, accessions to the archives have been less formal and work is in progress to produce a catalogue of the collections to facilitate discoverability.

Hovenden Estates Maps, 1586-1605

These beautiful maps detail lands owned by the College in the counties of Buckinghamshire, Middlesex, Kent, Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Shropshire. They have been fully digitised, and are available to view on Digital Bodleian.

Vaughan Papers

The papers of Sir Charles Richard Vaughan (1774-1849), British emissary to Spain in 1808 who travelled widely in France, Spain, the Levant, Western Asia, and Russia. In 1825 he was appointed Envoy Extraordinary to the United States of America, until October 1835. A typed catalogue of the collection, compiled 1881-88, is available in the Library.
