Examination Fellow, All Souls College, Oxford

Examination Fellowships

Every autumn, All Souls College normally elects two Examination Fellows through its renowned Fellowship Examination. Formerly known as Prize Fellows, Examination Fellows join the College for seven years as full members of its academic community and governing body.

The Fellowship is open to those who have recently completed their first degree and who either completed that degree at Oxford, or are now registered as a graduate student at Oxford.

You are eligible to apply for the 2026 Examination Fellowship if you meet all of the following conditions:

  1. you have a degree (or by 1 October 2026 will have a degree) from the University of Oxford; or have registered (or by 1 October 2026 will have registered) for a higher degree at the University of Oxford; and
  2. you have completed or are studying for a degree in the Humanities or Social Sciences; and

  4. normally, you have successfully completed your first degree not more than seven terms before the relevant election, i.e. no earlier than Summer 2024.

The Fellowship offers exceptional graduates in the humanities and social sciences the opportunity to pursue independent research in a uniquely supportive intellectual environment. Fellows receive accommodation in College, financial support, and the opportunity to engage with leading scholars across a wide range of disciplines.

While many Examination Fellows go on to academic careers, others pursue work in law, public service, journalism, the arts, finance, and related fields.

The Fellowship is awarded solely on the basis of performance in a competitive examination and viva voce. The examination is usually held over two days in late September or early October.

You will apply to sit the exam in one of seven Specialist areas:

  • Classical Studies
  • Economics
  • English Literature
  • History
  • Law
  • Philosophy
  • Politics

In addition, you will sit General examination papers.
