My first career was as an Assistant Keeper of the Public Records, 1974-1991. I next became Anderson Senior Research Fellow of the National Maritime Museum to 1999, and then Professor of Naval History in the University of Exeter until 2008. Since 2008 I have been a Senior Research Fellow of All Souls (Emeritus since 2017).
