Jane Cooper
Jane Cooper is completing a DPhil on sublime poetics and natural philosophy in England, 1650-1740. Her research investigates the theory of the sublime in English poetics before Burke, with a focus on Royalist poetry and the reception of scientific advancement following the inauguration of the Royal Society. She also works on eighteenth century poetry; her forthcoming publication for The Journal for Eighteenth Century Studies is entitled “The Scriblerians and the Whig Sublime: A Reassessment”. She has taught Shakespeare and early modern poetry courses to undergraduates, and is available to supervise theses in the early modern period. She has written book reviews and essays in criticism for publications including the Times Literary Supplement, The New Statesman, and The Lamp. She has given public lectures on sublime poetics, Lucretian reception, and literary responses to the new science in Oxford, Bergen, and for the University of Belgrade. She has also written about her work for the University of Oxford’s Centre for Intellectual History and for the Laudato Si’ Research Institute. She is also writing a book on the story of monarchy in 17th century England as told through the lives of poets. You can read her other writing on her Substack website.
