I am a Senior Research Fellow in Law, a Professor in the Faculty of Law, and a member of the Centre for Criminology, University of Oxford. I am a Fellow of The British Academy, an Overseas Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law, and a Member of the Academia Europaea. I completed my DPhil and held a Prize Research Fellowship at Nuffield College, Oxford. I was then a Lecturer in Law at the London School of Economics (1989-1994) and, from 1994-2016, a Law Fellow at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, becoming a Professor in 2005. I have served on the editorial boards of many journals; currently, these are Criminal Law Forum, Criminal Law Review, Punishment and Society, Oxford Comparative Law Forum, and OUP’s Clarendon Studies in Criminology. I have held visiting fellowships at universities in Germany, Israel, America, and Australia, and I am a long-standing Conjoint Professor in the Law Faculty, UNSW, Sydney, where I am a regular visitor. I served as a Commissioner (2022-2025) on the Independent Commission on Counter-Terrorism Law, Policy and Practice hosted by the Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law.
