Professor Robert Hopkins
Rob Hopkins is a philosopher with interests in aesthetics, the philosophy of mind and philosophy of representations. He studied at Cambridge and UCL and has previously worked at the University of Birmingham, the University of Sheffield and NYU. He has published on the philosophy of the visual arts (including painting, sculpture, film and photography); on various topics in the epistemology and metaphysics of aesthetic and ethical value; and on sensory imagination and episodic memory. His current focus is on the holistic character of representation in pictures, which he hopes will provide a useful model for the way in which all art, in whatever form, sustains its meaning; and will help explain how all these symbols serve our aesthetic and epistemic ends. In this he is following the lead of one of his philosophical inspirations, Susanne K. Langer.
