Lecturer in Law, universities of Cardiff (1973-79), Manchester (1979-88). Lecturer then Reader in International Law and Fellow of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge University (1988-1999). Chichele Professor of International Law and Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford University (1999-2012; now emeritus). Member of the Institut de droit international. KC and Bencher of Gray's Inn. Practised as counsel in the International Court of Justice and other international tribunals; and sat as an arbitrator in ad hoc international tribunals (Barbados v Trinidad & Tobago; Croatia / Slovenia; Ukraine v Russia) and various tribunals under the International Centre for the settlement of Investment Disputes), and as an ad hoc judge in the European Court of Human Rights . Currently researching and writing on international law, especially on the Law of the Sea (preparing the fifth edition of The Law of the Sea with co-authors Robin Churchill, Amy Sander and Reece Lewis) and on the application of international law to cyber activities.
