In a paper published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society, Professor John Cardy FRS, Emeritus Fellow of All Souls College, explores a mathematical connection between the architecture of the Pantheon in Rome, Nicholas Hawkmoor’s 18th century ceiling in All Souls, and the famous Mercator projection map of the Earth.  He shows that, although the Romans and Hawksmoor knew nothing of the mathematics of conformal mapping, their creations accord with its principles, revealing a deep connection between mathematics and architecture.  Read more here.
